It’s a bittersweet day for the British royal family, as members both mourn the absence and celebrate the incredible life of Queen Elizabeth II, on the 100th anniversary of her birth.

The late monarch’s eldest—and most senior—adult children, King Charles III and Princess Anne, commemorated the special day with different activities that honored her.

Charles visited Queen Elizabeth II: Her Life in Style—the new Royal Collection Trust exhibit, which is the largest-ever exhibit of the late queen’s fashion—at the King’s Gallery. He also held a birthday party (with cake!) at Buckingham Palace for residents who also turn 100 years old today, and posted a tribute to his mother on social media, sharing several lovely images of her throughout her life.

The Princess Royal remembered her mother—the longest reigning monarch in United Kingdom history—by opening The Queen Elizabeth II Garden in The Regent’s Park and making a touching speech about the beloved monarch.

And while they did not attend engagements of their own, Prince William and Princess Catherine’s homage to the late queen was just as touching. The couple shared an Instagram post including rarely-seen photos of Elizabeth through the years, as well as more recent images of her with the Wales family—William, Kate, and the pair’s three kids, Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, 7. (Louis was only four years old when the queen died on September 8, 2022, but was luckily able to be present at her Platinum Jubilee celebrations just months before her passing.)

In their post, Kate and William wrote: “Remembering Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on the 100th anniversary of her birth. Inspiring generations through a lifetime of duty.”
