Avan Jogia and Dove Cameron star in the new sexy, psychological thriller 56 Days

Jogia and Cameron play Oliver and Ciara, a couple who fall hard and fast for each other, only for an unidentified dead body to be found in their apartment 56 days later

The key to Avan Jogia and Dove Cameron's steamy chemistry is humor.

While they're both former child stars — Jogia became a teen heartthrob on Victorious, Cameron gained fame on Disney's Liv & Maddie — they didn't exactly know each other well before they were cast as love interests in Prime Video's new sexy, psychological thriller, 56 Days.

The series, which is based on Catherine Ryan Howard's book of the same name, is part romance and part whodunit, as it begins with an unidentified body found in the bathtub of their apartment, and there's no indication whether the victim is Oliver (Jogia) or Ciara (Cameron) — or who killed who.

Developing their magnetic on-screen chemistry was made easier by the fact that, as Jogia tells PEOPLE, they're both "deeply unserious,"

"Chemistry is also such a casting thing. This is why we have casting directors. Their job is to intuit that that would work," Jogia, 34, says. "And then I think, secondarily, just — we were able to look out for each other. I think that also helped through the process, and trust building and safety."

"And also just being deeply silly, I think that's really what it was," he says.

Cameron, 30, echoes that they are "deeply silly, stupid individuals," and agrees that the shared trait made things easier. "But we can lock in and be serious on time," she promises. "We save it all up for being off-camera."

She also gives credit to the rehearsal time they had prior to shooting. "When we were with our first director, Alethea [Jones], she wanted to have us read the script, talk about things, which is not always available to us," Cameron explains.

"So we had some time to be like, 'Oh, you're a normal person here in your sweats. Oh, we're talking this through together.' Basically, just to not be strangers, I think, helps a lot."

It also helps that they have such a similar history. "There's sort of a little bit of an [understanding from being a] child actor," Jogia says.

As he explains it, it feels like he and Cameron are "from the same neighborhood, type thing" because of their shared experiences. "We grew up in the same neighborhood."

56 Days is now streaming on Prime Video.
